Xu Bao Guang, originally from Suzhou city in Changzhou prefecture, South China, came to the Ryukyu Kingdom in the year 1719 on an investiture mission for the appointment of King Sh? Kei. This was in order to collect information about Ryukyu tributary affairs. It records all their experiences of Ryukyuan customs, language, geography, history etc, as well as the way in which ceremonies were carried out, as a study of ancient texts; illustrations also included. There are many instances where Edo period scholars have depended on this writing for their information relating to Ryukyu. It was also introduced into Europe, due to an abridged translation from French missionary Antoine Gaubil. In the first volume, geographical areas, sea routes, and ships’ logs are written about.“The History of Naha City” translation from classical Chinese is recorded in the first volume.
