Abstract :The characteristics of wind and wind energy resources at Nishihenna cape of Miyako island are studied by estimating the wind rose, wind speed distributions, wind energy density, turbulent intensity and gust factor. The results show that total annual wind energy production for a 250 kW wind turbine is about 869 MWh per year in the period of March, 1990 ~ February, 1991 and it can provide 241 families with the electric power for one year. The area centered on the observation site is divided into four regions, namely, the first faces to the open sea area, the second to Miyako island area, the third to Irabu island area and the last to Ikema island area respectively. According to the estimation of turbulent intensity TI and gust factor Gu for each region from the data obtained by the special measurements, it is found that the values of them in the region of Miyako island area are greatly increased up to 0.17 and 1.50 at average wind speed around 8 m/s and keep constant about 0.07 and 1.15 respectively at other average wind speeds, as same as that in the other regions.
