Abstract :To evaluate the effect of three major cationic species in natural waters, Na^+, Mg^<2+> and Ca^<2+>, on the coagulation-sedimentation of negatively charged red soil colloids, the sedimentation rates in electrolyte solutions have been measured optically. The Ca^<2+> critical coagulation concentration has been determined to be 0.5 mM. It has been found that the sedimentation time in synthetic groundwater, which is almost a 2 mM CaCO_3 solution, is comparable to that in synthetic seawater with a high ionic strength of 0.5.
