Abstract :The self-excited oscillation has become a major concern in wind resistent design of high-rise buildings. In this study, for the wake behind a two-dimensional square cylinder in uniform flow, proposed is a non-linear equation of motion which has a Rayleigh-type damping and a hardening spring. The influences of mass ratio, the linear term of the aerodynamic damping and the coefficient relating to Magnas effect affecting on the frequency lock-in and the stability diagram are discussed through the approximate periodic solutions for the coupled equations of motions of the cylinder and the wake. Furthermore, the responses of the cylinder and the unsteady forces are analyzed numerically through the Runge-Kutta method applying a seventh degree polynominal for the stationary forces. The results on the responses and the unsteady force have shown good agreements with the experimental data. As a consequence, it is concluded that the proposed model is useful to understand the mechanism of the interaction of the vortex-induced oscillation and galloping.
