Abstract :Four specimens of the snapper, Lutjanus dodecacanthoides (Bleeker), were collected from the Yaeyama Islands, the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. This species is the first record from the Japanese Archipelago, and characterized in having 12 dorsal spines and a series of five to six oblique yellow stripes. Although Akazaki (1984) reported it as L. rufolineatus (Valenciennes), his figure was based on a specimen from Southeast Asia. Allen and Talbot (l985) wrongly included Japan in the range of L. dodecacanthoides by citing specifically Akazaki's color photograph. Among other Japanese members of Lutjanus, the specimens reported as L. johnii and L. luzonius by Shinohara (1962, 1966) are reidentified as L. ehrenbergii (Peters) and L. boutton (Lacepède), respectively. There is no actual record of L. johnii from Japan. The species of Lutjanus most Japanese authors have identified as L. caeruleovittatus or L. rufolineatus is L. boulton. These taxonomic confusions are discussed.
