Abstract :Among the annual events of ancient ongin in the Ryukyus is a primitive ceremony called shinugu. This ceremony, though gradually disappearing, is still observed in some communities as a ceremony of thanks-giving and prayer to the god of fertility and prosperity. During this ceremony daces called ushidēku odori are played, exclusively by women of various age, as an entertainment. Special songs are sung during the dances. It is quite probable, however, that these songs undergo transformation with a passage of years due to the facts that the songs are practiced during a short period prior to the annual event, and that the melodies of these songs are not very easy to learn. The writer, therfore, felt it necessary that these ushidēku songs are kept inreliable musical notes. The present report, as an initial attempt for noting these songs in various communities, includes the scores for the five ushidēku songs which are all sung during the shinugu ceremony of Toguchi community.
