Abstract :The purpose of the present study was to clarify the status of special classes in Okinawa Prefecture described in the reports of four national surveys of special classes, run by the Ministry of Education in Taisho Era. Those surveys were done by the School Health Department and the Social Education Department of the Ministry in the years 1923 to 1926. In the reports, we can find some information about special classes in Okinawa Prefecture in those days. The information includes not only the number of schools which had the special classes, the number of special classes and pupils in the classes, but also the details of the case of special classes in Asato Elementary School. This paper analyzed the description connected with Okinawa Prefecture in the four reports. The results were as follows: (1) There were some special classes in Okinawa Prefecture during the prescribed timet (2) the classes were organized based on the grades in main subjects of pupils, and (3) the average number of pupils per class was more than 50.
