Abstract :1. This study is for the purpose of obtaining a key on minor elements of Ryukyuan soils. The Spurway Soil Test Kit was used for preliminary testing on soils from 20 locations in Ishigaki Island. 2. Mg^<++> is well supplied in most soils. However, samples from two locations of the twenty contained only one ppm. or less in soil extract for the active test. So it is suggested that the possibility of magnesium defficiency in these soils may be noticed. 3. Samples from four locations may have an Fe^<+++> defficiency risk because they are very low in Fe^<+++> by reserve test. In rice paddy soils from one location, very high content of iron was found in reserve test extract. I suggested that tha reserve test of Fe^<+++> may be acceptable for diagnosis "Akiochi Suiden" (degraded paddy field). 4. Low Mn^<++> test results were obtained from samples of seven locations. These results indicated that the possibility of Mn^<++> defficiency may be encountered io these soils. Samples from five locations among those tested have had pH value. Furthermore, samples from four locations were high in Mn^<++> content which may indicate manganese toxicity for certain crops. There is the difficulty of reserve test for Mn^<++> in high Fe^<+++> cantent extract. 5. Low test results in SO_4^<--> content were obtained in all samples except one. 6. Other minor elements besides the above were not examined because the Spurway Soil Test Kit does not have such testing methods. 7. Tests were also made on other than minor elements which are summarized as follows: a) All soils except one were low nitrogen content. It is suggested that they need nitrogen fertilization. b) All soils were also low in phosphorus content which indicates the need for good phosphorus fertilization. c) Potassium reserve test results were preponderantly high. However, some had low active test results which suggest the need for reasonable potassium fertilization. d) Ca^<++> were high in slightly alkaline soils, and contrarily low in acid soils. It is suggested that the former is unsuitable for most acid-soil crops, including pineapple, oranges, tea plant etc. Acid soils need lime application for high-lime crops such as barley, soybean, spinach, etc. e) Al^<+++>, Na^+, Cl^- and NO_2^- were all below toxic levels.
