Abstract :For wave height prediction in unbounded coastal domains, the treatment of the boundary condition at the infinity, i.e., the Sommerfeld radiation condition, is the most significant. The finite element method (FEM), as a numerical simulation method, can handle the radiation condition skillfully in terms of the infinite element. The representative infinite element presented by Zienkiewicz et. al. (1985), however, has some inconvenient features, such as singularity in the element integrals due to the characteristics of mapping and difficulty in connecting the infinite element to any interior element in the region to be analyzed. It is therefore required to remove these fatal properties for extension of FEM to the nonlinear unbounded wave problems. The present paper develops a new infinite element based on an idea for the infinite mapping, proposed recently by introducing the complementary element. Numerical experiments for three kinds of models indicate efficiency of the new infinite element.
