Abstract :There are large areas of forests in Okinawa where Pleioblastus linearis Nakai is undergrowing wildly. It hinders afforestation by preventing for natural sprouting of tree and making the land difficult to plant. We have done experiments of controlling the bamboo with Esteron 245 and the results of them were reported preliminary, and authors have found the following seven points through studies of change of lowergrowth vegetation, sprouting and growing condition of sprouts, sprouting condition of the bamboo etc. in each experimental plots. 1. No or little grasses were growing in not applied chemical plots, but Miscanthus sinensis Anders and many other species of grasses were growing in every plot in the first spring after the application, and the most parts of the plots were covered with grasses in the second summer, It is evident that the chemical application proved considerable effect upon the improvement of the lowest vegetation of the forest where the bamboo is growing densely. 2. The number of sprouts and their growing condition in the plot where the bamboo was chemically controlled and cut trees were far superior to those of the plot where no chemical applied for control of the bamboo and cut trees. 3. The percentages of sprouts of the bamboo in accordance with the times of application and the kinds of solnant are as follows, It is evident that the controlling effect is very high whenever the chemical is applied,(*table1) 4. The percentages of sprouts in accordance with different treatments of the bamboo previous to the application were generally, 4.1~6.4% in the plot of no treatment, 4.2~5.3% in that where the bamboo was cut two feets above the ground, and 7.2~11.2% in that where it was cut at the ground level. But the effects of treatment were not significantly different, and the controlling effect of the bamboo by the chemical was high in every plot. 5. The percentage of sprouts in accordance with different concentration of the chemical in both kerosene and water were 4.5~6.6% in 6.3% concentration, 5.3~7.2% in 3.1%, and 6.7~7.0% in 1.6%. Controlling effects with different concentrations are not significantly different. It was found that even a low concentration of 1.6% showed considerable high controlling effect of the sprouting of the bamboo. 6. The percentage of sprouts in accordance with the kind of solnant was 3.4~8.8% with kerosene and 5.1~6.9% in water. The difference is not significant, but chemical in both solnants showed high controlling effect. 7. The number of shoots in each plot is as follows. No shoots developed in the first growth season after the application of the chemical and a few shoots grew in the second growth season. It was evident that the controlling of the bamboo with the chemical is very effective.(*table2)
