Abstract :Chinese has two forms to express potentiality: one is adding an auxiliary 'neng (can)' before the verb, the other is infixing 'de (get)' or 'bu (not)' in the verb. The former way of expressing potentiality is common among languages. The latter is rather unusual, since both 'de' and 'bu' are not potential morphemes. In this paper, I will show that a Chinese verb refers to an action in potential situations, and that this property of Chinese verbs explains why the infixing of 'de' and 'bu' can express potentiality.
