Abstract :Due to its geographical reason the Ryukyu Islands experienced a unique historical process other than the rest part of Japan. We see today unique characteristics in its culture, tradition, folk-customs and others. Those facts have caught scholors' accademic interests, the accumulated studies of which resulting, so called by some researchers, Okinology. However, comparing studies in other fields, as the author sees it, there has not been paid much attentions to historical study in civil engineering side except architectural one. Responding to recently-rising interests to historical studies in civil engineering, the author started a study on Okinawa's ancient massonry structure, this time placing enphasis on the stone-wall structure of the Guskus, a special name given to the old catsles in Okinawa.
