Abstract :In this report of investigation, there described the states of the damages and deteriorations of School buildings of Tsuha Primary School (Nakagusuku-Mura) and Aguni Primary and Secondary School (Aguni-Jima). The Investigation was done from the view point of durability of reinforced concrete structures, i. e., damages and deteriorations of concrete caused by corrosion of reinforcing bars embeded in concrete. The following items are clarified. 1. The oldest school building in Tsuha Primary school built in 1929 are deteriorated seriously. The main cause of the deterioration is the carbonation of concrete over the region of reinforcing bars. The salt content of concrete samples taken from the building is small and 0.05% on the average. 2. In Tsuha Primary School all of the buildings built before 1965 are damaged due to corrosion of reinforcing bars in girders or/and columns. 3. The eaves of all of the Tsuha Primary School buildings built before 1965 are damaged seriously or in some degree. The main cause of the damages are salt contained in concrete of the school buildings. Low quality of concrete used and poor practice of placing reinforcing bars are also responsible for the above. 4. The School buildings of Aguni School are not so damaged and deteriorated as we expected. Only two buildings among 13 are damaged in giders and columns. 5. The eaves and outside slabs are damaged seriouly in 5 buildings in Aguni school, all of which are built before 1965. 6. The handrails of the outside stairs in both schools are damaged seriously and it is dangerous to use them. 7. The independent columns of outside corriders in both schools are deteriorated, while other main structural elements are still sound. This phenomenon is observed in other part of Okinawa Prefecture, too.
