Abstract :The growth of a biological sludge mass in batch oxidation follows the sigmoidal curve shown in Fig.1. An empirically developed relationship between biological growth and substrate utitization that is commonly used for biological systems stabilizing organic wastes is: (ds)/(dt)=-a (dL)/(dt)-K₃S (1) where S=sludge concentration present (ppm), a=growth-yield coefficient (ppm-VSS/ppm-BOD), L=BOD remaining (ppm), K₃=outo-oxidation rate (1/hr). At low concentration of BOD, the BOD removal rate will be expressed by first-order reaction (b-c, Fig.1). BOD removed can be expressed by following relationship (Eckenfelder and McCabe, 1960): (dL)/(dt)=-KL (2) where K=logalithmic BOD removal rate (1/hr). These equation (1) and (2) may be integrated simultaneously to the following result: S=(aKL₀)/(K-K₃)(e^〈-K₃t〉-e^〈-Kt〉)+S₀e^〈-K₃t〉(3) where L₀=initial concenration of BOD(ppm).S₀=initial concentration of sludge (ppm). This equation is tried out if it is fitted to experimental result by using glucose and (glucose+pepton) as substrate. The result is shown in Fig. 2 and 3. It will be seen thatthe inte grated sludge growth curue will be fitted to experimental result, if Lo/So is adeguate.
