Abstract :The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the stress management education was effective to junior high school students facing the psychological stress prior to high school entrance examination. In this study, the single-issue focused approach of stress management education was applied as opposed to comprehensive approach. A total of 65 males and 44 females were randomly selected from 6 classes in this study, and the subjects were lectured what stress theories are, and to introduce relaxation techniques for the subjects to practice. Also, the subjects were asked to answer questionnaire both at the beginning and a week to two weeks after the lecture to assess the effectiveness, such as stress response, specifically the entrance examination stress response, and other health symptoms. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1) Looking at am easurement of the stress response, the difference between pre education and post education was significant (post education decreased: t=2.76, p=0.007). Further, one of the factors "laziness" of stress response compared to "anxiety" and "anger" especially for the male students between pre education and post education was significant (post education decreased: z=-2.9, p=0.004).2) Another factor of the questionnaire asked the subjects "feelings", such as "unwilling", "distress" and "disgusted" of the stress response facing the entrance examination for both male students and female students was significant between pre education and post education (pre education: male t=-3.0, p=0.003, post education : female t=-3.29, p=O.OO1). Thus, although there was a small difference between male students and female students how they responded to stress between pre education and post education, the combined result of both male students and female students was significant (post education decreased: male z=-2.63, p=O.009 and female z=-2.06, p=O.039). Moreover, one measurement of the stress response specifically "study stress" compared to "time stress" and "interpersonal stress" of the entrance examination for both male students and female students between pre education and post education was significant (post education decreased: male z=-2.49, p=O.013 and female z=-3.09, p=O.002). In conclusion, this study found the single-issue focused approach of stress management education for junior high school students to reduce psychological stress of facing the high school entrance examination was effective over all. However, as a future consideration, we need to develop new methods of single-issue focused stress management education, and these methods have to be suitable and beneficial to the students, including social support of parents, teachers and classmates.
