Abstract :The study is mainly aimed to reveal the relation among social-cultural cognition, self-esteem, and social adjustment of college students. Measuring methods for social-cultural cognition, self-esteem, and social adjustment were examined on the college students from Okinawa and outside of Okinawa. Based on the results of these measuring methods, the following findings were obtained. 1) Students from Okinawa have more positive social-cultural cognition on their home prefecture than the students from outside of Okinawa. Regarding self-esteem, however, no significant difference was recognized between the two groups. As for social adjustment, it was indirectly suggested that the students from Okinawa carry out more favorable social adjustment than the students from outside of Okinawa. 2) Based on the social identity theory, the hypothesis that college students with more positive social-cultural cognition on their home prefecture categorized by themselves have higher self-esteem and more favorable social adjustment was examined to be generally proved.
