Abstract :The purpose of this study was to formulate a standardized and reproducable format for the objective evaluation of dances. Forty-eight evaluators were asked to codify twenty different dances using a scale which contained seven gradations. Within each dance ther were forty seperate parameters considered. Thus evaluation corelations for each gradation in the scale could be extracted from the total data (40×20×48) that had been collected. The findings were analyzed with axial rotation according to the Varimax method, accordingly the scales were grouped in five dimensions. Each load factor was found to be over =0.5. Three fundamental patterns of appreciation of dances were extracted from each dimension of these scaling groups. They were termed as "evaluation," "dynamics," and"clarity" respectively. Since these three dimensions of scaling group maintain an independent rectangular relation respectively, they do formulate Euclidean geometrical space. By locating any dances in such a space as to be prescribed by these dimensions, it is possible to study characteristic relationships among any dances in their appreciation. At the same time, three dimensions of scaling group also enable one to formulate a new scale method. A further study concerned with the development of this new scaling method for the comparative assessment of dances could be done.
