Abstract :This paper examines how“dissimilation”and“assimilation” have occured in phonological change in Northern Ryukyuan dialects. By dividing phonological changes in the Northern Ryukyus into “dissimilation” and “assimilation,” I will examine how phonemic insert, loss, merger, and split occurred in the dissimilation and assimilation processes in the formation of compound/derived words and their grammatical structures, while pointing out that there are several types of these phonemic changes. Clarifying both the dissimilation and assimilation process, as well as analyzing how these processes interact with each other in phonemic changes, the present analysis will contribute to our better understanding of the past and present conditions of phonemic change in Northern Ryukyuan dialects.
