Title :Hotel Germany. Didaktisch-methodische Überlegungen, Durchführung und Analyse von handlungsorientiertem und lernerzentriertem Deutschunterricht an der Ryukyu-Universität

Abstract :The article deals with experiences gained from planning, conducting and analyzing the German language and culture summer camp in Oku, Okinawa, in 1999 which involved 19 students, 4 instructors and 2 guests from Germany. In the context of a 4-day-project centering around themes from German hotel life ("Hotel Germany") like booking a room, arguing about bills, service in restaurant and cafe, working at a hotel action-oriented and learner-centered principles were applied to teaching methodology. These involved communicative actions like role-play, learning by doing, involvement of more senses than usually activated in classrooms. The learners' assumed interests are the starting point of all planning and the students' active participation in class and decision-making are enhanced. While not unfamiliar to younger foreign language instructors in Germany these methods seem to be relatively new to many of the students in Japan. The result of this trial was that these methods work very well when applied in a situation in which the students feel outside normal classrooms as exemplified by three minidramas around hotel situations produced and performed by the students with only minimum teacher instruction given. They work less well and need further development and adaption when applied in a more conventional classroom situation in which well-known communicative obstacles to free speaking on the students' part limit their success.
