This paper is concerned the comparison of measurements of body size of water buffaloes (swamp type) in Okinawa islands and correlation among traits of body parts. Thirteen characters of the animals over three years old were measured and compared among islands. The numbers of buffaloes examined were 97 females, 39 males and 19 castrated males. These animals were from Yonaguni, Ishigaki, Kohama, Iriomote, Okinawa, Minami-Daito and Kita-Daito islands. The average body measurements, which were weighted for number of buffaloes in each island, of females, males and castrated males for withers hight, oblique body length, chest girth, chest depth and hip width were 124,129,130; 143,150,146; 195,202,205; 72,75,76; and 52,55,55cm, respectively. The differences in body measurements among islands were significant in these three groups. Especially, body size of females in Okinawa island was smaller than those in other islands. All correlation coefficients obtained among possible pairs of 12 characters in females, males and castrated males, except horn length, were positive. Castrated males showed the highest coefficients, while females and males presented intermediate and the lowest values. It was found that the correlation coefficients among traits in buffalo were lower than those in cattle.
