Abstract :For a long time, the image of Ryukyu in Occident was such as an “El Dorado”. Although the Occident recognized the fact that Satsuma invaded Ryukyu in 1609, it wasn’t aware of the relations of China and Japan. For that reason, the affi liation of Ryukyu was unknown. As the Occident’s ships arrived in Okinawa in 1840 and 1850’s, the Westerners noticed Japanese presence in Ryukyu. However, Ryukyu was occupied by Satsuma was still hardly known. Since the arrival of a French ship, L’Alcmène in 1844, by adopting a modest attitude and by showing the misery of the country toward the Occident, the kingdom of Ryukyu refused all contact with the foreigners and the kingdom acted so that the foreigners leave as early as possible. As for the foreign policy of Ryukyu, the Occident began to understand gradually. However especially thanks to the stay of the missionaries in Ryukyu, Leturdu, Adnet and the family of Bettelheim, it allowed Ryukyu diplomacy to reveal. Consequently, at least until 1848, this Ryukyu diplomatic politics was very effi cient towards Occident.
