Abstract :Poultry farming in Japan is mainly large-scale. Small and medium-sized poultry farms have a larger number of management entities than large-scale management. However, they are inferior to large-scale operations in terms of egg productivity. Therefore, those poultry farms must increase their production scale, which in turn will increase the generation of poultry manure. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: (1) to investigate how the medium and small poultry farm processes poultry manure; and (2) to ascertain their problems in processing poultry manure. This study was conducted on communal compost centers and poultry farms in Okinawa main island. A poultry farm can process poultry manure either at one’s own farm or consign it to a communal composting center. These centers, however, process more poultry manure than other livestock manure. Since they have processing limits, they may refuse manure from poultry farms. This possibility strongly affects the poultry farm’s decision of the method of manure processing. Processing manure at their own poultry farms would increase costs and labor issues. Conversely, when outsourced to communal composting centers, the exact amount of waste accepted is determined by their processing capacity. Our study accepts that it is becoming increasingly difficult for small-scale poultry farms to sustain their current scale of operation due to inferior productivity vis-a-vis larger firms. However, even if they expand operations, they still have to solve the difficult problem of depositing the poultry manure.
