Pictures of Horses
Authors :松茂氏宮良當宗(作)
Issue Date :マツモシミヤラトウソウ
Abstract :1件。各1丁。35.4×45.6cm。楮紙。
There are 5 pictures of naked horses ( 1 Red, 2 Blacks, 1 Brown and 1 pale black) and 4 pictures of Satsuma warriors at the lumberyard. It appears that the picture with the red horse was painted by Miyara Peechin Tousou, who was the Kashira(Head) of the Yaeyama Island Magiri (district) since 1872. The horse riding pictures portrayed the Satsuma warriors dressed in formal attire, driving the decorated horses fast. It is suggested that the pictures of naked horses were painted in Yaeyama but questions such as why the Satsuma warrior riding pictures were painted in the first place and whether they were painted in Naha or Yaeyama still remain unanswered.
