Abstract :AStudy Group of Self-determination of Persons with Mental Retardationconducted a questionnaire survey in 1997 to determine the degree to which professionals who support such persons respect their self-determination. The Questionnaire surveyed the coping styles in 12 actual examples. In the present report, free descriptions of a seeking-different-occupation scenario were re-totaled for every coping style. The coping style of the majority (83.9%) of the persons when the subjects sought a change of occupation wasTry to persuade him or her to continue. Next, the comment was reanalyzed, and a method of persuasion was considered to dissuade subjects from their self-asserted. Demands. the case of making self-assertion abandoned was examined. Consequently, the most frequent coping style wasto persuade subjects to stay on, given their handicaps. Many professionals resorted to emphasizing the subjects' fault drawbacks, making them feel miserable and applying pressure or threats. Fewest of all were professional attempts torespect and enhance subjects' autonomyThe importance of talking things over in the self-determination scenario was discussed with reference to the situation in Sweden
