Abstract | : | The pattems and motifs of the state chamber of shuri Castle form a unique design. A careful study of this design can, I think, teach us a lot about the aesthetic consciousness of the era in which Shuri Castle was built and the social context of its construction. Powerful paintings and sculptures of dragons and lions constitute an integral part of the design. In this paper the focus is on the form and style of the dragons in the state chamber, on their role in the overall design, and especially on their relation to the flamboyant globular gems. |
